HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Book Campaign (Distinction)

without comments

For his book campaign project, Stephen chose to work with The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. His final posters were all painted by hand as the brief specifies and he created them as a triptych so when they are placed together, they create a single comprehensive image.
.
With these posters, Stephen sent the book itself and a binder full of development work mounted on shiny black card and the report to justify his design decisions.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Pound Shop (Distinction)

without comments

Stephen picked up a small wooden elephant from the pound shop. In order to make it look like it’s worth £10, he re-invented a logo and created packaging with see-through sides in the shape of the product. Inside is a small booklet explaining the religious and cultural symbolism of the elephant.
.
Along with his final product, he submitted a heavy binder of research and development work and his short statement to accompany the project.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Book Campaign

without comments

Amanda chose to design her book campaign around North and South by John Jakes. Her posters could not be computer generated and had to be followed by a 500-1,000 word explanation of her choices.
.
Along with her posters and explanation, Amanda sent in drawings, research on other book cover designs of a similar nature, brainstorming, mind maps and ideas.
.
Her sketchbook was slightly larger than the scanner, but you get the idea! Below are her group of posters followed by some pages of her sketchbook that shows research and ideas generation.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Book Campaign

without comments

From a charity shop, Sue had to choose a book around which to design a campaign. She chose to work with Marley & Me by John Grogan for her love of animals (dogs, especially.) Using this book, she had to create a series of posters and write a statement of up to 1,000 words (not posted here) to justify her decisions. Markers were Sue’s choice of medium for her work.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Pound Shop

without comments

After buying an item from a pound shop, Sue had to set out to create a new image for it. Her goal was to make it look like something worth £10 by redesigning the logo and packaging. This was a study in what gives value to a product, what makes it worth the price, and sometimes this is down to packaging. Sue chose a hanging garden chime to work with.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Book Campaign (Distinction)

without comments

Derrick chose to promote Ben Elton’s novel, Dead Famous, for the HNGD 004 book campaign assignment. After producing a sketchbook full of mind maps, research and planning, Derrick came up with a final posters and a booklet to go along with his work.

Note that the new briefs do not allow computer generated final submisions.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Pound Shop

without comments

Derrick had to re-invent a product identity for this pound shop assignment on HNGD 004 Ideas Generation. After buying a cheap item, a fishing reel, he recreated a logo and produced a booklet full of ideas.
.
The sketchbook is split into tabs with the following sections:
Fish Ideas & Research
Reel Research
Logo Development
Model Logo
Functions Icons
Imagery Retouch
.

Derrick’s booklet of ideas was literally about 50 pages long, but here’s a few pages! I scanned the images so they’re not perfect (as usual) but you get the idea.
And you might have to zoom in on the images to read everything because no one told me how to make them bigger without blurring the words yet!! :)

So there’s a bit of a different way the pound shop assignment has been tackled from Ashley’s earlier example.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: The Book Campaign

without comments

Assignment 2 for HNGD 004 Ideas Generation, ‘The Book Campaign’ asks students to visit a charity shop and pick up a book of interest for not more than £2.50 and ’sell this book to your class’. For distance learners, a target audience can be chosen by the student.

Ashley used the popular book, The Da Vinci Code for his poster campaign. He showed the ideas that were generated on the way to the final products neatly displayed in a book beside the final submissions.

The catch with this unit was that it had to be completed designed by hand; no computer generated posters.

The final submissions:
.

.

.

.

.

.
And the process of ideas generation:
(Not every page of this book is included but you can get the idea)

.

The cover of the ideas book
.

The initial research with a book cover attached
.

.

Mind Maps

.

.

.

Some sketches
.

Outside inspiration
.

.

.

.
So you can see how it all came together.
.
The lecturers comments on this above average piece were positive with the only recommendation being to carry a ‘tag line’ throughout all of the posters to tie them together.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: The Pound Shop (Distinction)

without comments

Ashley’s task for assignment 1, ‘The Pound Shop’, was to reinvent the identity of a product bought at a pound shop. The goal was to use packaging and make this £1 product look like it is worth £10. He actually had the packaging printed out on a professional machine.
.
When showed to a class of on campus students taking this module, they thought the final result was a real product bought at a shop for a range of £10-20. Ashley was awarded a distinction for this assignment for its professionalism and depth of planning.
.
The following photos do not show the entirety of Ashley’s work and the colours have gone a bit funny in the photos, but it shows an idea of the thought process that is important to this module and the end result.
.
The final product:
.

The Finished Product
.

And the process:
.

A giant booklet of ideas, neatly presented (and the heaviest submission I’ve ever received via post…)
.

Receipt from purchase and original packaging included first
.
Mind Mapping
Giant mind maps, also found in other parts of the ideas book
.

Some inspiration from other packaging
.

Some research
.

Ideas in Progress
.

Stock photos that may be useful
.

Packaging design cut outs
.

Research on what’s included in packaging
.

Testing and a few material samples
.

More ideas
.

In action at the printer
.
As I said, this is just a sample of what was included in the giant book of ideas and the photos are poor quality, but this at least shows what it takes to get a distinction in HNGD 004 Ideas in Context, assignment 1!
