Book Suggestion for Advertising
Hi Steph
I found this book at Waterstones after a random visit a few weeks ago, I am finding it very interesting and useful. Could be a good choice for future booklists?
Hope you had a good xmas.
Derrick.
Your portfolio – what’s in it and where is it?!
Hello fellow GD-UCKies
I don’t have a vast amount of graphic design work under my belt, but am gradually starting to pick up a few more bits and pieces here and there in addition to the stuff I do for work. Currently I don’t really have a portfolio but know I really should start one.
So do you have one? What’s it look like? Is it digital or do you have a physical portfolio that you lug around with you?
I got to thinking about it as I happened upon this today, and thought there was some great advice on there so thought I’d share

A Few Artsy Events
We just got posters in the mail from the University of Gloucestershire to hang on the college bulletin boards so I wanted to pass on the info for these events in case anyone is interested.
The first one is called The Independent Line. It is a “one day symposium exploring autonomies and alternatives for the new generation of narrative illustrators.” It takes place Wednesday, 15th October and features Paul Gravett, Steve Braund, Jackie Batey, Damien Gascoigne and Benoit Jacques. Chaired by Chris Mullen. The address is University of Gloucestershire, Pittyville Studios, Albert Road, Cheltenham.
The other event, the Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2008, takes place from October 16 – 31 at the same location. It is open daily from 10 – 4. It is called Tall Tales: Exhibition and features narrative illustration from students, emerging talent and professionals.

HNGD 007 Drawing Techniques and Approaches: 3D Object (Distinction)
Choose and draw and organic object was the starting point for this assignment. After that, Derrick had to create three graphical representations.

Next, a final drawing had to be created:

The other part of this assignment was to explore the use of negative and positive space and different shapes to provide a variety of possible graphical solutions. Then create a final drawing and write a statement (not posted here) justifying your choices:

Condom Wrapper Design Competition
LCUCK Students have been invited to participate in a condom wrapper design competition to win a few cool prizes like a iPhone, a magazine subscription to Eye and an Ann Summers gift voucher. I’ve scanned the letter and the poster so you can see what it’s all about.

An Article on the Design Industry
Rosie interviewed book designer David Pearson for her HNGD 005 Critical Study module a few weeks ago. She must have made a good impression because he emailed her out of the blue with a link to an article he thought would interest her. She emailed me it to me so I could share it with everyone else.
Hi there Rosie
I hope you’re well.
I found this article and thought that you might also be interested:
