HNGD 001 Computer Application in Art and Design: CD Cover

without comments

Eira created a Fantasy Moods CD by Dark Angel for her CD cover design project. She first explored many different options before making a final decision which is seen in her development work. The final project was submitted in a CD case and displayed on a large board.

HNGD 001 Computer Applications in Art and Design: Microsoft Logo

without comments

Ewan had to renew the Microsoft logo for assignment 1. After a bit of research on the history of the company he had to design variations of the old logo by keeping some of its characteristics, integrating the old with the new. Ewan’s final submission had to include his three best designs and a PowerPoint presentation.

HNGD 001 Computer Applications in Art and Design: CD Cover

without comments

In this second assignment for unit 1, Shannon had to design a CD cover. This CD cover was to reflect her personality and taste in music. She had to include photography/illustration, a list of tracks and a biography of herself as the recording artist. And, as always, development work.

HNGD 001 Computer Applications in Art and Design: Microsoft Logo

without comments

Shannon was given the task of re-newing the Microsoft logo in this assignment. It has a few key characteristics: colour, shape, font, etc. Her goal was to develop something refreshing that was still recognizable as Microsoft. At the end, Shannon had to submit her development work along with her best three designs and a PowerPoint presentation.

HNGD 001 Computer Applications in Art and Design: Microsoft Logo (Distinction)

with one comment

Eira has worked through the Microdoft logo design project testing out various ideas and including her comments on what works and what doesn’t for each one. She tried altering the shape, the texture and the colour of the design to come up with something new and original. Her final design and the stages she took to get to that point are posted below in the order they were presented:

HNGD 001 Historical and Contextual Referencing: Newsletter

without comments

Again, an old brief. Laura was required to create a one-page newsletter, looking at the relationships between typography, design and images. She was to use Quark or InDesign in a combination with text editing software and image manipulation software. She chose the environment as her topic.

HNGD 001 Computer Application in Art and Design: Assignment 1 (Distinction)

without comments

Here’s another example of one of the older briefs. Those of you on this module now probably have the new briefs so these might not be of too much use as far as being able to see what has been submitted in the past, but they are still interesting! This one is Laura’s. After each section, she had a page where she explained the method she used but there are too many to post so I’m sure if you leave her a comment, Laura will tell you what she did!
.
First things first: the table of contents!
.

.
In section 1, Laura had to produce three vector objects based on her own sketches and then a concert poster using a bitmap image in FreeHand/Illustrator to produce a photo real image.
.
The objects:

.

.

.
And the concert poster of the infamous AW:

.

.

(This has some fun stars in the background that didn’t show up in the scan…)
.
In part 2, Laura had to manipulate, enhance and montage three scanned images using Photoshop than produce an advert about digital communication combining the use of Illustrator and Photoshop.
.
The manipulated images (middle step on each not posted):

.

.

.

(Again, these images scanned quite dark, but you get the idea)
.

.

.
And the digital communication advert:
.

.

.

.
In part 3, Laura had to design some typography for a commercial brief. The project was an album cover with emphasis on type as an element of design. After that, she had to design a custom typeface for an image consultancy based on her own sketches and the blending of two traditional typefaces.

HNGD 001 Computer Application in Art and Design: Newsletter

Stephen, again, is using the old version of this assignment brief. It has asked him to produce one page of a newsletter using Quark or InDesign plus other maniputlation software and basic Word documents. Stephen chose to base his newsletter on a review of American band Fleet Foxes.

HNGD 001 Computer Application in Art and Design: Assignment 1 (Distinction)

with 3 comments

Stephen’s assignment has many parts and, as you can see from the picture of the binder below, I’m not going to be able to post all of it, unfortunately! This is the older brief for HNGD 001 so many of you won’t have the same assignments, but here’s a look at Stephen’s work section by section.
.

.
In the beginning of each section, Stephen included a page breaking down what is included in each section, his method of working and any other notes he felt were relevent. I won’t include any others, but here’s an example. This worked great for keeping everything organised!
.

.
Part 01 called for the creation of vector-based objects based on your own sketches. Stephen chose Le Penseur, his Comic Self and a bottle of H2O. Below are his drawings and vectors.
.

.

.

.

.

.

.
Part 01.1 required that Stephen import a bitmap into Illustrator and produce a photo real image to promote a concert.
.

.

.
In part 01.2, Stephen had to manipulate, enhance and montage three scanned images (not posted) and then explore colouration methods (below).
.

.

.

.
Part 01.3 required Stephen to produce an advert about digital means of communication aimed at 18-25 year olds. He had to use a photo he captured himself and add layers, filters, etc. in both Illustrator and Photoshop. Here’s some of the planning and the final piece.
.

.

.

.

.

.

.
Part 01.4 is about designing typography for a specific commercial brief. The subject here is an album cover. Stephen did quite a lot of exploration and research for this section so I won’t be able to include all of it, but here’s a sample!
.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.
And finally, the last task of assignment 1, part 01.5 which was to design a custom typeface for a logo of a brand of music based on your own sketches and plending of two traditional typefaces. Once again, lots of back up research and planning so here’s a sample.
