HNGD 014 Developing a Personal Style: Changing Places

without comments

This assignment embodies the cliche idea of “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes”. It forced Derrick to look at life through the eyes of a Japanese woman – the persona he chose to represent the opposite of himself.

After extensive research and development work, Derrick submitted 6 A2 foam boards with professionally printed images showing his new self, a Japanese woman in various stages of life and in different situations. This was followed by an essay of self-evaluation and further notes.

HNGD 014 Developing a Personal Style: Collection of Personal Styles (Distinction)

without comments

For this assignment, Derrick had to gather and present a range of images that have been either copied or plagiarised. These images have been considered to fit into a distinct personal style developed by the artist.

Derrick submitted a large sample of work David Carson, Andy Warhol, H.R. Giger and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Along with this, he sent his essay including his personal analysis for each image.

I won’t post the images because there are too many and they are obviously not Derrick’s original designs, but here’s is the table of contents for the essay which accompanied the folder of images.

Your portfolio – what’s in it and where is it?!

without comments

Hello fellow GD-UCKies

I don’t have a vast amount of graphic design work under my belt, but am gradually starting to pick up a few more bits and pieces here and there in addition to the stuff I do for work. Currently I don’t really have a portfolio but know I really should start one.

So do you have one? What’s it look like? Is it digital or do you have a physical portfolio that you lug around with you?

I got to thinking about it as I happened upon this today, and thought there was some great advice on there so thought I’d share :)

Design Event: Wouldn’t it be nice…wishful thinking in art and design

without comments

From an email for students:

Somerset House Embankment Galleries is holding an event next week as part of the exhibition Wouldn’t it be nice…wishful thinking in art and design  of particular interest to design students: Dot Dot Dot, Dexter Sinister and guests, 29-31 Oct. Students are eligible for a special group student ticket price (£4 each) if a few of them are interested in going to see the exhibtion.

Dot Dot Dot (evenings 29-31 Oct. 7pm)

Dot Dot Dot is an arts journal published by Dexter Sinister, a collective working from New York. In recent years the biannual journal’s form and content has been influenced by the specific context of its production.

Over three evenings content for Dot Dot Dot issue 17 will be articulated ‘live’, through dialogue, talks and visual presentations from contributors including James Goggin, Jennifer Higgie, Will Holder, Richard Hollis and Dan Fox. The idea is to ‘speak’ the issue in advance of it’s printed version, and the various forms of presentation will directly inform their various modes of graphic and linguistic translation. The resultant publication will be available from Somerset House Embankment Galleries at the end of the exhibition Wouldn’t It Be Nice…

Tickets are £5 for each night with a £1 bar

For more information and tickets please go to somersethouse.org.uk

HNGD 002 Historical and Contextual Referencing: Artist Retrospective (Distinction)

without comments

Stephen chose Robert Rauschenberg as the subject of his artist retrospective. Tate Modern was his chosen venue for the exhibition.
.
As with the decade assignment for this unit, Stephen submitted a wide array of background research leading up to his final piece which is a 20-page booklet from cover to cover. The work, including over 50 pages of initial planning, was submitted in a professional binder (and a heavy one at that!)

HNGD 002 Historical and Contextual Referencing: Decades (Distinction)

without comments

Stephen chose the 1910s and 1950s for his decades assignment. In a minimum of 1,000 words, he had to present each decade in terms of art and design and how these aspects of life were influenced by historical events.
.
Presented in some heavy-duty professional binders, Stephen laid out his plans over 50+ pages that included scribbled thoughts, internet research, examples of art movements and historical events of each decade, mind maps, layout ideas, page guides, typography research, colour decisions, bibliography, etc.
.
Below is the final presentation for each decade designed in the style of the time and a sample of the background work included.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: Book Campaign

without comments

Amanda chose to design her book campaign around North and South by John Jakes. Her posters could not be computer generated and had to be followed by a 500-1,000 word explanation of her choices.
.
Along with her posters and explanation, Amanda sent in drawings, research on other book cover designs of a similar nature, brainstorming, mind maps and ideas.
.
Her sketchbook was slightly larger than the scanner, but you get the idea! Below are her group of posters followed by some pages of her sketchbook that shows research and ideas generation.
