HNGD 002 Historical and Contextual Referencing: The Artist Retrospective (Distinction)

Rosie chose the infamous Tim Burton to focus on for her artist retrospective assignment in HNGD 002. After researching his life and work, she had to put together a 1000-word exhibition booklet that included Burton’s work and captions she would include, a bit about the historical context and era in which he worked, his influences and a bibliography. It should also include the layout of the gallery which, in Rosie’s case, was the Serpentine in London.

Again, this unit focuses on research and should be submitted with a folder of evidence and a bibliography.

Her work on this assignment landed Rosie a distinction and a recommendation to get this booklet printed out professionally which she is planning to do for her portfolio.

HNGD 002 Historical and Contextual Referencing: The Decades Assignment

One of Rosie’s assignments for HNGD 002 was to choose two decades which she had to research. Her task was to draw conclusions about the world’s historical events of these decades and how they influenced art and design movements then present this information in a graphical essay of approximately 1000 words. The main purpose of this assignment was to test research skills. Rosie’s well-written assignment (which you probably can’t read from such small jpeg images) was accompanied by a great example of a long Harvard Referencing bibliography.

If anyone can tell me how to make these images larger without blurring the words, go for it. But you can get the general idea here.

HNGD 006 Ideas in Context: Preview Night (Distinction)

Derrick chose Iron Man for his preview night assignment. The task was to produce a preview night poster, a brochure, a free gift and an invite for the chosen event. Again, the process of creating the final submission was just as important as the end result.

HNGD 006 Ideas in Context: Corporate Identity for a Chain Restaurant (Distinction)

Derrick’s task for this assignment was to choose a chain restaurant in the UK and re-invent its corporate identity. Doing so, he was to come up with a menu, chopstick holder, placemat and wine list in true-sized samples using this new identity and his unique design.

Derrick chose to re-invent the identity of Wagamama.

So you can see how Derrick tried out a few different ideas, themes, etc. for each piece of his final design. The ideas process is very important for this module which should include rejected ideas as well which you can see in Derrick’s submissions.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: The Book Campaign

Assignment 2 for HNGD 004 Ideas Generation, ‘The Book Campaign’ asks students to visit a charity shop and pick up a book of interest for not more than £2.50 and ’sell this book to your class’. For distance learners, a target audience can be chosen by the student.

Ashley used the popular book, The Da Vinci Code for his poster campaign. He showed the ideas that were generated on the way to the final products neatly displayed in a book beside the final submissions.

The catch with this unit was that it had to be completed designed by hand; no computer generated posters.

The lecturers comments on this above average piece were positive with the only recommendation being to carry a ‘tag line’ throughout all of the posters to tie them together.

Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising

Richard popped in to give me a leaflet on the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising in Notting Hill, London. The current exhibition is called, “The Journey of a Lifetime featuring The Robert Opie Collection.”

The exhibition includes toys, games, posters, magazines, fads and fashions, postcards and packaging.

HNGD 004 Ideas Generation: The Pound Shop (Distinction)

Ashley’s task for assignment 1, ‘The Pound Shop’, was to reinvent the identity of a product bought at a pound shop. The goal was to use packaging and make this £1 product look like it is worth £10. He actually had the packaging printed out on a professional machine.

When showed to a class of on campus students taking this module, they thought the final result was a real product bought at a shop for a range of £10-20. Ashley was awarded a distinction for this assignment for its professionalism and depth of planning.

The following photos do not show the entirety of Ashley’s work and the colours have gone a bit funny in the photos, but it shows an idea of the thought process that is important to this module and the end result.

As I said, this is just a sample of what was included in the giant book of ideas and the photos are poor quality, but this at least shows what it takes to get a distinction in HNGD 004 Ideas in Context, assignment 1!
